Gaming Mice – How Do I Choose?

When it comes to choosing the best gaming mouse for your PC, it is easy to get lost while trying to find a mouse that is both comfortable and will meet your gaming requirements. There are a ton of features that are available nowadays so you should have a good idea of what you're looking for before purchasing. First of all, just what is a gaming mouse? Really, it is your typical mouse on steroids! Is designed to provide flawless performance during game play, allowing for precise reaction to the herky-jerky motions of the hand while playing. It also allows for great customization which is usually driven by supplied software. You would use the software to program the different buttons that are on the mouse so that each button corresponds to a particular command within a particular game that you are playing.
Here are some of the features that you should look for when doing your gaming mice comparisons:
  • Sensitivity (DPI) - higher DPI results in less movement required by the hand during gameplay. This is especially important in FPS games where you need to look left to right at all times. You do have to consider how steady your mouse hand is, as too high a DPI may result in enhanced jerky movement. Many gaming mice allow you to adjust the DPI on the fly with the button.
  • Programmable buttons -- you absolutely need a mouse that has programmable buttons for various game commands and movements. Supplied software usually allows for this and you want to choose a mouse that will allow for different profiles for different games.
  • Size and Design -- if you have smaller hands where you normally grip the mouse with your fingertips, you may want to choose a smaller mouse. If you normally grip the mouse with your palm, or if you have larger hands, then you may opt for a larger mouse.
  • Weight -- if you play hours and hours of gaming on your PC, you may want to choose a lighter mouse. Many gaming mice come with small weights that allow you to adjust the weight of the mouse itself. Some people also find that if the mouse is heavier, it allows for smoother hand control. But, you should be aware that a heavier mouse can put additional strain on the hand and wrist.
  • Connection to PC -- until recently, the most reliable performance would come with a wired connection, such as USB. Wireless gaming mice are becoming more common along with advancements in design that increase the performance and reliability of using a wireless connection.
  • Appearance -- this feature is really a matter of personal taste. There are many mice out there with incredible colors and designs. Many also have glowing lights to show that you mean business!
  • Price -- many decent gaming mice can be purchased for under $100. Check out Amazon for a great selection!
Hopefully, this guide will help you in your hunt for the perfect gaming mouse. There are many different gaming mice out there, so take your time when doing your research. You'll be spending many hours gaming so choose a mouse that best fits you, while keeping in mind the features mentioned above.
